How to Get from Daegu to Pohang (and on to Yeongildae Beach)

Daegu is the closest major city to Pohang, so most domestic visitors start their trip there. You have three realistic options: KTX from Dongdaegu Station (fastest), an express bus (cheapest), or driving (most flexible). This page explains how each one works and how to finish the last leg from Pohang to the beach.

By KTX from Dongdaegu Station

This is the option most people take. Dongdaegu Station sits on the main line, and trains to Pohang run through the day, so you rarely need to plan far ahead outside holidays.

  • Roughly 1 hour from Dongdaegu to Pohang Station, with several departures each hour at peak times.
  • Book a few days ahead for weekend and holiday travel, when morning trains fill first.
  • From Pohang Station, the beach is a 15 minute taxi ride — the station is not within walking distance.

By express or intercity bus

Buses are the cheapest way and often the most frequent. Dongdaegu's bus terminal serves both express and intercity routes to Pohang, and journey times are competitive with the train once you allow for getting to the station.

  • Around 1 h 20 min to 1 h 40 min depending on the service and traffic.
  • Departures are frequent through the day, so it is a good fallback if trains are full.
  • You arrive at the Pohang bus terminal in the city, then take a city bus or taxi to the beach.

Driving from Daegu

Driving gives you the most freedom and is the usual choice for families or anyone combining Pohang with other stops in Gyeongsangbuk-do. The route runs on expressways the whole way, but the last stretch into Buk-gu is where traffic collects.

  • About 110–120 km: Gyeongbu Expressway, then Donghae and Iksan–Pohang expressways, exiting toward Buk-gu.
  • Allow 1 h 30 min to 2 hours outside rush hour, and considerably more on summer weekends.
  • Parking near the beach fills by late morning in peak season, so arrive early or park further out and walk.

The last leg: Pohang to Yeongildae Beach

However you arrive, the final step is the same: get from central Pohang to the coast at Buk-gu. Taxis are cheap and quick; city buses cost less but take longer and need a transfer.

  • Taxi from Pohang Station or the bus terminal: about 15 minutes, roughly 6,000–10,000 KRW.
  • City buses toward Buk-gu and Duho-dong stop near the beach and take about 25–35 minutes.
  • Tell the driver 영일대해수욕장, or give the address 1015 Duho-dong, Buk-gu.

How long does it take from Daegu to Pohang?

By KTX from Dongdaegu Station it is about 1 hour. By express bus it is roughly 1 h 20 min to 1 h 40 min. Driving is about 110–120 km, or 1 h 30 min to 2 hours outside rush hour.

Is KTX or the bus better from Daegu?

KTX is faster and more predictable, which matters on summer weekends when coastal roads clog. The bus is cheaper and very frequent, so it is the better fallback when trains are sold out. Either way you still need a short taxi or bus ride at the Pohang end.

Do I need a car in Pohang?

Not for Yeongildae Beach itself — taxis and city buses cover the station-to-beach leg well. A car helps if you also want Guryongpo, the POSCO museum or other sites outside the city centre, but parking near the beach is tight in peak season.

Can I do Daegu to Yeongildae Beach as a day trip?

Yes, and many people do. Leave Daegu in the morning, spend the afternoon at the beach and Space Walk, eat at Jukdo Market and take an evening train back. Check the last departure time before you plan the day.
